Depositing assets increases your available trading balance. Placing an order or providing passive liquidity commits some of that balance until the action is completed or unwound.

What an order reserves

A sell order reserves the asset being sold. A buy order reserves the payment asset and the maker-fee allowance needed if it fills. The reservation prevents the same funds from backing multiple orders. It does not mean the trade has already happened.

A partial-fill example

Suppose you deposit 1,000 USDC and place a resting order to buy 0.2 WETH at 2,500 USDC. For this example, assume no fees. With fees, the reservation and final balance also reflect the applicable charge. See Fees.

Passive liquidity is separate

Providing passive liquidity moves assets out of available balance into a position. That inventory is not an open-order reservation. It can change composition as traders buy and sell against the position. A balance display that adds only available and reserved funds does not include passive-position inventory. Index passive-band events separately when reconciling market-wide liquidity. For integration details, use Accounts and Funding and the balance API.
